Thank you to one of our members for pointing out this very valid point.
Jeff Dahmer’s confession was not taped. This is yet more evidence that this was nothing but a show.
Listen as Detective Murphy admits to defense attorney Gerald Boyle that he did not tape the 60 hours of discussions with Jeff, Detective Kennedy, and “the other officer.” There is no recording of Jeff Dahmer’s confession. The only record of it is Murphy’s “typewritten notes and recollections.”
Detective Murphy admits that he made “judgment calls” as to what should be written down, and things that he didn't think were important were not written down.
Detective Murphy said that this is “normal police procedure” - “That's correct” he replies.
You heard right. That’s what he said.
This would never happen in the real world. Confessions are recorded as evidence.
Think of the repercussions in a real case if there was no recorded confession (and especially something on this scale). Professional liability claims? That's just the start.

Absolutely. Confessions are recorded because it’s evidence. Officers do not make judgment calls only on what to write down:)
